The works slowly amassed to over an hour of material that ranges across the borders of dance/theater, butoh, hip-hop, contemporary ballet and post-postmodernism, titled “Double Exposure.” It’s world-premiere run opened Thursday at ODC Theater in San Francisco and repeats through Sunday, though tickets are gone, except for possible box office releases, returns or no-shows. Arrayed like a series of snapshots, the “Double Exposure” dances “expose” Rein and Smith in the works of the disparate choreographers. At the same time, the two dancers “expose” the commissioned artists to the public.

The director wasn’t that familiar with step, but as soon as she saw a practice she understood the power of it. It felt like a musical. Watching the performance reminded her of “the way you feel when (characters) expresses themselves through song,” she says. “That’s what they were doing with step.”. Viewers can see what she’s talking about in the movie. The fiery Giraldo channels her emotions into her athletic routines, and Grainger, who’s bookish and shy, uses step as a release. It’s the time when she can be as bombastic as she could ever want.

Billboard magazine has referred to Coachella as the world’s biggest music festival. Up to 198,000 people have attended in recent years when combining the crowds on each of the two back-to-back weekends it is held. Stagecoach, held the third weekend, has drawn up to 75,000 fans. People of all ages attend, but – especially for Coachella – the target demographic is young adults, many of whom are as interested in the experience as the music. The festivals draw people from all over the nation and world. While some non-local fans fill up surrounding hotels and rental homes, on-site camping is popular as well, and Stagecoach features a massive RV camp.
