Louis G. Lekas, owner of Nick & Gus’ — a popular eatery at 12th Street and Broadway — whose hard work and congeniality drew diners from far and wide, died Oct. 21 in Napa. The gregarious Oakland native of Greek heritage known to all as Lou began his 70-plus-year culinary career as a child at Nick & Gus’ busing tables, washing dishes and helping out while then-owners Nick G. Fifle and Gus L. Lekas (Lou Lekas’ father) cooked and fed customers. Before it was Nick & Gus’ hole in the wall, it was Kewpie’s Sweet Shop, selling fruits, nuts and candy. Lou Lekas’ uncle, James Lekas, was the shop’s first owner, having purchased it in 1909.
