PALO ALTO — Work is to begin next week on a $36.4 million project to replace the gyms at Palo Alto High School. On Tuesday, the Board of Education voted 4-0 to finalize a set of agreements that will see the Peery Family Fund contribute $23.4 million to the so-called Paly Athletic Center project. Board Member Terry Godfrey was absent. The remainder will come from the district’s Strong Schools bond program, according to bond program manager Bob Golton. The district had planned to spend about $13 million renovating the athletic facilities at Paly, but the additional funding from the Peery Foundation will enable it to build a pair of brand-new gyms, Golton said.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”: Why is this superhero adventure with a perfectly cast Chris Evans reprising the role of a now-thawed-out Steve Rogers so superior to other recent comic-book offerings? Because it tells a meaty and smart story that boldly advances the Marvel Universe, uses special effects effectively and stars an outstanding cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie black baby shoe, toddler ballet slipper, bootie crib shoe, flower girl shoe, baby girls ballet flat, wedding, special occasion, and Robert Redford, H * * ½ — (Randy Myers, Staff) PG-13, 2:16, “Chef”: As actor, writer and director, Jon Favreau brings his A-game to this romp about a once-celebrated but later embattled Los Angeles chef now in a rut, who takes a road trip in a food truck to find his soul and his food again, The supporting cast is terrific, * * * — (Roger Moore, McClatchy-Tribune) R, 1:53..

Having the cast come from all corners of East County also speaks to Koch’s commitment to being part of the community and making a difference. She believes strongly in the importance of growing a community of young performers and fostering the love of the arts in the entire community. In fact, there will be a meet-and-greet where theatergoers can visit with the characters up-close and take pictures on both Saturday and Sunday. Performed by children, the Nutcracker lends itself to delight all ages, from its easy story line to its touches of magic and, as Koch describes, “little surprises hiding around every corner of the show.”.
