There are some good lines in Act One, some conversational tidbits hinting of revelations yet to come. But you can almost hear chirping crickets scratching their heads trying to figure out what makes such an interesting, lively woman as Videllia Sparks, stop and stay where the spinning world dawdles. But stay for the second act, because the revelations, which glide constantly along the realm of eerie dark humor, are both fun and jaw-dropping. Plus the staging — a creation of moody swamp and tiny-old-house Southern hospitality, lit by moonlight and murkiness (the incredible lighting is by Carson Duper) — is fantastical. On top of that, in Act Two the audience gets to meet The Reptile Woman (Kalena Coleman), a soul-reading, shadowy diviner. The Reptile Woman and Videllia Sparks are the “kerosene” characters of the Sanders’ play, lighting up the whole thing like a bonfire, making you want to look more deeply into the match (those Nettles sisters), who started the whole plot smoking to begin with.
